More on Henckels Knife Sets
The Henckels company, like Wusthof and a few other knife makers, is based in Solingen (“The City Of Blades”) in
the west of Germany. The company started here is 1731 when swords were their stock in trade but this has evolved
into more focus on knives, knife sets and other kitchen utensils. The company continues to have it's base in
Solingen and there is no indication that this will ever change. However some of the manufacturing process is now
done in Japan.
Other than that, Henckels have many subsidiaries across the world and have many specialist stores around the
globe selling their knife sets and other cutlery.
The company is also known as Zwilling J.A. Henckels. Zwilling is the German word for twin and the star sign
Gemini and this motif is featured on the logo that is put on most knife sets. This logo is two figures joined
together on a red background. This is the seal that indicates that you have a Henckels knife set and of course a
hallmark of quality and excellence. Zwilling or Twin also identifies many of the lines that are produced by the
company too.
Some of the lines of knife sets available include :
Four Star line – the four star line is one of the older range of knives currently available. It was first
introduced in 1976 and features a fully forged knife with full tang. This set has polypropylene or plastic
handles.
The Twin collections which include TWIN Select, TWIN Cuisine, TWIN Professional "S", TWIN Four Star II, TWIN
Cuisine, TWIN Gourmet and TWIN Signature. These knife sets are all made in Germany and vary in terms of
manufacturing process, materials used and look.
For instance, many of the Twin series knives have polypropylene ergonomic handles whereas the Professional S
line have a more traditional looking handle that features three brass colored pop rivets that attach the handle to
the forged metal.
Most knife sets use high carbon, stainless steel to make the blades. This material is fully forged and then ice
hardened. The ice hardening process reduces the chances of staining the blades during use and also helps them to
retain sharpness. All knives are hand sharpened as part of the manufacturing process. The exception to this
manufacturing process is the TWIN Cermax M66 which is made in Japan using a microcarbide powder steel which is
layered on to build the shape of the blade.
Most of these sets can be purchased as is or with a wooden block. The wooden block is a perfect place to store
the knives safely. The block can be located on a kitchen worktop so that you have easy access to the knives. The
knife block set can complement the look of your kitchen and also provide it with the essential tools needed for all
your cooking needs when working in the kitchen.
